Vendémian - Languedoc, FR

There may be no one who works more quietly than Julien Trichard in the village of Vendémian. Alongside his wife, Sara Hernandez, both natives of the south with deep roots in Occitanie, Julien has been making wine here since 2009. He works out of an old cooperative cellar that he purchased and later built his home above. Few people seem to know his name outside the region. Yet among winemakers, he is well known, and more often than not, has shared a glass or two with anyone who passes through.

Julien and Sara farm roughly nine hectares of Carignan, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Much of the work is done with their horse, Kiwi, who helps till the soils and carries grapes during harvest. The fruit is picked ripe, and the wines are made without complication. They are meant to be drunk young, generously, and without ceremony.

Like his cellar neighbor at L’Erba D’agram, Julien focuses less on export and more on the people who come directly to the cellar door. Their life is small in scale and firmly local, shaped by the rhythms of the region rather than the demands of distant markets.

When you visit their home, you are likely drinking Julien’s wine while eating pork and sheep’s cheese made by his sister in the mountains of the Hérault. It is a life built on proximity, familiarity, and quiet continuity, and the wines carry that same spirit.
