Grange 476

Château-Chalon - Jura, FR

Just above the village of Menétru le Vignoble lies the Source de la Brenne, a natural spring that provides drinking water to the surrounding area. The water emerges cold and mineral from the Jurassic cliffs, offering relief in summer to the hills below Château Chalon. It is here, in Menétru le Vignoble, that Dimitri Vetois and Marion Valverde have established their domaine, La Grange 476.

Dimitri, originally from the Berry, grew up in a winemaking family. Marion was raised in the Auvergne and later moved to the Berry to train as a nurse, where the two met. Their story began there, though Dimitri’s path toward wine had started years earlier. In 2009, he traveled to New Zealand to work at the biodynamic Rippon Vineyard, an experience that shaped his understanding of farming. He later completed a BTS viticole in Beaune, followed by cellar work in Sancerre, Burgundy, and Limoux.

In 2015, they began making small amounts of wine together. Four years later, they set off by car to meet winemakers whose work might inspire them, hoping to find both direction and a place to settle. Their meeting with Marc Angeli proved decisive, reinforcing a desire to make wines of clarity and purity that continues to guide them today. After a long search, they found their home in the AOC of Château Chalon, a region best known for its long aged, hay colored Savagnin wines.

Today, Dimitri and Marion farm four hectares of Savagnin, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Poulsard, and Melon à Queue Rouge. Marion returned to school to learn horse farming, and all vineyard work is now carried out by their two Comtois horses, Solferino and Kyhr.

The wines are made parcel by parcel, with the aim of expressing the gray marl bedrock beneath soils of clay and pebbly limestone. Whites are pressed directly, while reds are destemmed using an old cane destemmer. All wines are aged in old barrels beneath the house for a minimum of one year, followed by another year in bottle before release.

The resulting wines recall the Source de la Brenne itself. They are layered, dense, and deeply mineral. These are wines built for time, yet like water, they offer refreshment even in their youth,
