Damien Bureau
Anjou, FR
Damien Bureau’s path to winemaking began well before his return to his native Anjou. He spent his formative years working with small domaines across the Jura, Roussillon, and Burgundy, including time alongside Sébastien Dervieux. These experiences helped shape both his palate and his philosophy.
In 2006, friendship and circumstance brought him home. Patrick Desplats and Babass of Domaine des Griottes entrusted Damien with his first parcel of Chenin Blanc, and he established his cellar in Champ sur Layon, at the heart of the Coteaux du Layon.
Today, Damien farms just over two hectares of organically certified vines, spread across the region’s schist and clay limestone soils. His work centers on Chenin Blanc, the grape that defines Anjou, though he also tends small parcels of Grolleau, Gamay, Pineau d’Aunis, and Cabernet Franc.
In the cellar, Damien favors clarity and restraint. Fermentations are allowed to proceed naturally, sometimes long and slow, with no filtration and minimal intervention. To preserve freshness, most wines are raised in fiberglass tanks, with oak reserved only for his sweet Layon style cuvées. Depending on the year, his Chenins may be dry, off dry, or richly sweet, each bottle shaped as much by the season as by the hand that guided it.
Damien’s wines are vivid and precise, alive with freshness. They offer a direct expression of Anjou, capturing both place and moment with quiet honesty.
